A Small Girl

Have you ever met a small girl that completely enthralled and captured your heart? I have, small and petite but feisty as a small sailor. She lets no one intimidate her, and yet she has a soft heart full of compassion. She is a kindergartener by day, her Mom's best helper by night, full of hope and energy to all who meet her. She is special and sweet. Struck by the world around her, she does not fail to comment on all that that greets her in her daily life. When she sees someone smoking, she quickly bows her head and prays for the one who was caught "cigaretting." Last summer upon her visit to a summer program, she noticed another small child upset and lonely for his recently-departed-to-work Mom. I had tried to coach her for her own sake that these moments might occur. Unbeknownst to my simple mind, this comfort was not used for herself, but she quickly put it into action, walking up to this crying youngster whom she had never met, putting her arm around him and looking at me for approval that she was doing it "just-right" said to him, "It's okay, your Mom will be back soon." When to her surprise, the boy responded with a louder cry, she just shrugged her shoulders, returned to my side and moved on to her next calling, her tummy, asking me every thirty minutes thereafter, "Is it time for snack yet?" After all, she is only human, but quite a little human she is, and she's only 6!
